"The Mortifications" is a novel by Derek Palacio, published in 2016. The story follows the Encarnación family during the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, a mass emigration of Cubans to the United States. The family is torn apart when Uxbal Encarnación, the father and political insurgent, refuses to leave Cuba, while his wife, Soledad, and their twin children, Isabel and Ulises, flee to America. They settle in Hartford, Connecticut, where each family member undergoes personal transformation and grapples with their past and identity.
